1. $3,000 – $5,000 to study in Indonesia

ACICIS, Indonesia are currently accepting applications until the 1 September, 2018 for all semester 1, 2019 programs, including:

• January-February 2019 intake of ACICIS’ Law Professional Practicum (LPP) for which Monash currently has 4 x $3,000 NCP grants; and
• January-July 2019 intake of ACICIS’ Indonesian Business, Law and Society program (IBLS) for which Monash currently has 6 x $5,000 NCP grants.

2. GSP: Jindal India Immersion Programme

Reminder that calls for expressions of interest by UG students for the January 2019 Global Study Program: Jindal India Immersion Programme is open and will close on the 1 October 2018.

The India Immersion Programme will allow students to participate in seminars, lectures and field visits with leading academics and professionals from a variety of industries.

The course provides its participants with an introduction to India’s diverse regulatory, business and social impact landscape. The Programme is a valuable experience for Australian University Students studying Law, Business and/or Arts.

Wednesday Night Advice Only Service

Applications for the Wednesday Night General Advice Session at Monash Law Clinics Clayton will open at 9am Monday 3 September 2018 and close 10am Tuesday 11 September 2018. Please note that late applications will not be accepted.

You are applying to be part of the Wednesday night volunteer team, which provides advice to clients experiencing a wide range of legal problems.

Students are rostered to volunteer on Wednesday nights on a fortnightly basis from 6:00pm until approximately 8:30pm. This volunteer period will run until April 2019.

Orientation will be held on Wednesday 26 September 2018 at 6pm at MLCC.

Sessions will commence on Wednesday 3 October 2018

Students are rostered to volunteers on a Tuesday night on a fortnightly basis from 6:00pm until approximately 8:30pm. This volunteer period will run until April 2019.

Applications for Tuesday Night Family Advice Session at Monash Law Clinics Clayton will open 9am Monday 3 September 2018 and close 10am Tuesday 11 September 2018.

Section 44(i) of the Constitution and the dual citizenship cases of the last two years have attracted an extraordinary amount of public attention; the other subsections of s 44 – concerning disqualification for criminal conviction, bankruptcy, pecuniary interest and holding an office of profit under the Crown – less so. They, however, are equally fraught with difficulties of interpretation, and in at least one instance pose a challenge to representative democracy less easily resolved than requiring renunciation of foreign citizenship.

This lecture considers what emerges from the 1890’s Convention Debates about the subsections’ evolution, including some proposed amendments which, had they been accepted, would have radically changed the ramifications of s 44; the jurisprudence which exists in relation to the subsections, and the extent to which clarification has been achieved; and some remaining uncertainties with the potential to cause future headaches for politicians, the High Court and the public.

Applications are now open for the Law Student Essay Awards

The Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia is pleased to commemorate the life and contributions of Michael Taussig QC, one of the Section’s most outstanding members, with two Family Law Essay Awards in 2018. Current law students are encouraged to apply for one of these awards, the Law Student Essay Award.

One Award will be offered to the value of $1,500.  To Apply for the Award, eligible candidates must submit an unpublished essay of no more than 3,000 words (including footnotes, appendices and tables) on a family law topic and its broader relevance to the community, by 20 August 2018.

1. Legal Research Associate at Family Court

The Family Court of Australia is seeking a Legal Research Associate.

Legal associates assist with researching cases, points of law, preparing matters for hearing including other related matters for first instance judges and of the Court. Legal associates are responsible for providing assistance to judicial officers during court hearings and other administrative support to judges, as required. In addition, legal associates perform court support duties, when required. Legal associates primarily provide assistance to two designated judges but may be asked to assist other judges if the need arises.

2. Fighting the Death Penalty: Making a difference in the long term

Join this conversation between Julian McMahon SC and Richard Bourke, Director, Louisiana Capital Assistance Centre.

Join us for a rare chance to see one of America’s leading experts being put on the stand to discuss his challenging work.

Having worked at LCAC since 2002, Richard Bourke has been on the front line of anti-death penalty case work in the southern states of the USA.

Richard will be asked to shed light on the key difficulties his clients face, and on differences between death penalty cases in the USA and Asia. He will reflect on the strategies and debates being played out in his work and nationally, to bring about abolition.

ACICIS’ Law Professional Practicum (LPP) gives students a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience working in Indonesia’s legal industry.

Students attend two weeks of academic tuition, including Indonesian language classes and a series of seminars and fieldtrips, prior to undertaking a four-week supervised practicum placement (internship) in an Indonesian legal workplace environment.

No background in Indonesian language is required to participate in this program. Learn more and apply here.

The Windsor Review of Legal and Social Issues (“Windsor Review”) is now inviting contributions for Volume 40, to be published in Summer 2019. The Windsor Review is an entirely student-run and double-blind peer-reviewed interdisciplinary law journal.

Our mandate is to promote an analytical, practical, and empirical approach to the study of law, incorporating the perspectives of multiple disciplines.
