2. Busk Stop Program, Clayton Campus

Monash University is currently seeking performers to participate in the inaugural Busk Stop Program.

Performers will be invited to entertain the campus community in a traditional busking format at a variety of identified locations around campus. The aim is to add to the vibrancy of the campus and create a fun/entertaining atmosphere.

The program will be running during week 10, Monday 5 October – Friday 9 October.

Performers may provide a facility for donations from the public toward their performance, in a subtle and non-intrusive manner and to assist Monash will offer a $50 donation to each performer.

5. International Humanitarian Law Student Writing Competition

American University Washington College of Law Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law (Center), the American Society of International Law’s Lieber Society (ASIL), and theAmerican Red Cross International Humanitarian Law team are pleased to announce the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Student Writing Competition. The Competition seeks submissions of academic papers on the topic of international humanitarian law (IHL) from students currently enrolled in a law degree program in the United States or abroad. The purpose of the Competition is to enhance scholarship and deepen understanding among students in this important area of international law.

The theme of the 2015 Competition is “The Intersection of International Humanitarian Law and Gender.” Papers should focus on ways in which IHL intersects with gender issues, such as the role of women as combatants, the gendered use of sexual violence during times of armed conflict, the impact of  gender stereotyping on international humanitarian law, etc.

6. Honours Research Unit Information Session 2015

Many of the Faculty’s top students in their penultimate or last year of law elect to enrol in the Honours Research Unit (Honours Thesis LAW4327).

The Honours Research Unit is a 12 credit point unit intended for students with an interest and aptitude to produce a significant piece of original work in an area of the law that fascinates them. The Unit involves students writing an 8-10,000 word thesis under the supervision of an academic member of staff, on a topic chosen by the student, and approved by the Honours Convenor.

Students also attend 3 symposiums throughout the year, designed to support them through the research process. At the end of the year students present their thesis findings to their peers and invited guests at a 2 day Honours Conference.

To be eligible for the Honours Research Unit, students must have an average of 72% or better across their law units, and have no more than 72 credit points remaining to complete the requirements of their law degree.

7. Refurbishment of Tennis Courts

From Tuesday 15 September to Sunday 15 November 2015 all of the 8 tennis courts on Clayton campus will be unavailable due to refurbishment of the courts.

There will also be restricted access for pedestrians behind the courts.

These tennis courts are located at 42 Scenic Boulevard (next to Sports & Rec).

8. Research Participants Needed for LGBTIQ Study

Would you like to participate in a research project concerning LGBTIQ, questioning and non-gender binary experiences of bullying and harassment in tertiary spaces. A new study is looking to interview undergraduate students at Monash as part of a pilot study.

The purpose of this study is to investigate who within the LGBTIQ student community experiences harassment and bullying in a tertiary setting; and determine what impacts this may have on LGBTIQ students’ access to supportive educational outcomes.

It is hoped that a greater understanding of LGBTIQ experiences of violence in university settings will allow further exploration into how such intolerance can be combatted to facilitate an increased understanding of the needs of LGBTIQ youth.

The Australian Institute of International Affairs and the Australian Branch of the International Law Association call for applications for the 2016 Peter Nygh Hague Conference Internship.

Each year, the internship provides a graduate or post graduate student with the rare opportunity to travel to The Hague in the Netherlands and work in the area of Private International Law. Prospective applicants should visit the AIIA’s website.

Extraordinary legislation is often resorted to as a means of protecting public safety. Such legislation inevitably draws the courts into the spotlight. Perilous times present the courts with a dilemma. This lecture seeks to canvass that dilemma and the lessons that can be learnt from past judicial experience in Australia and some selected jurisdictions.

Death by Algorithm – the advent of “killer robots” by Professor Christof Heyns

Professor Christof Heyns, UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions.

The use of force, in war and in peace, is increasingly impersonal. Unmanned systems are here to stay.

We have become all too familiar with the first generation of these unmanned systems: remotely piloted aircraft. Here the human is no longer necessarily physically present on the battlefield. An operator half-way around the world presses the button and a Hellfire missile is released from an armed drone. At the same time a further generation of unmanned systems is emerging, where human beings will not only be physically absent from the delivery of force, but also pshycologically, in the sense that computers and not humans will take the final decision on its release.

This development raises far-reaching legal and ethical questions. How good will they be at targeting? But also – should they be allowed to do this? Right to life and issues of dignity arise. But – does it really matter what we think about it? Have we not entered a new era where machines will take the important decisions?

The oration is an annual lecture celebrating the life and legacy of Sir Zelman Cowen, a distinguished scholar, educator, civic leader and – for five years – Governor-

The 2015 oration will be delivered by the Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, the Honourable Robert French AC. This event is free for students: registration is required. General admission is $10.
