1. Book Launch – United States Migrant Interdiction and the Detention of Refugees in Guantánamo Bay

Australia’s detention of asylum seekers in Nauru and Papua New Guinea is modelled on the long standing US Migrant Interdiction Program which includes the detention of refugees by the US in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

This new book by Dr Azadeh Dastyari examines the US’ compliance with its legal obligations as it interdicts asylum seekers at sea, detains refugees in its immigration detention centre in Guantánamo Bay and resettles refugees in third countries. It asks what lessons can be learned from the world’s longest running offshore processing and detention regime.

3. Law Council of Australia Scholarships: Business Law

Each year the Business Law Section offers three scholarships of $5000 to the writer of the best papers in fields of Competition, Corporations and Taxation Law.

The scholarships are targeted to ‘early career’ legal professionals with less than four years of professional experience in the legal field of their paper. In the past winners have come from across academia, business and government sectors.

These scholarships are well suited to any Honours or research student who has previously written on a topic in one of the available fields.

4. Environmental Justice Australia Volunteer Program – winter internships close 16 May 2016

Environmental Justice Australia (formerly the Environment Defenders Office) is offering a limited number of two-week internships for June – July 2016 to law students with a genuine and demonstrable interest in environmental issues, social justice issues and environmental law.

Opportunities available include providing paralegal support in Envirojustice cases, researching and updating publications and contributing to policy and law reform projects in areas such as biodiversity protection and climate change.

Internships are voluntary and based in the EJA office at the 60L Green Building, 60 Leicester Street, Carlton.

Competitions

1. HSF-NLUD International Negotiation Competition (INC)

INC is a competition organised by Herbert Smith Freehills and National Law University Delhi.

The first edition of the competition took place in 2014 and it was a big hit. The second edition, which was held in September 2015, drew participants from 23 internationally renowned universities from five countries, including the likes of Cambridge, Oxford, Sydney, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Cologne.

The competition aims at providing an opportunity to law students of select top universities across the globe to practice and improve their negotiation skills. It provides a platform for students to compete in a truly diverse and an international environment. The competition is carefully structured to simulate legal negotiations particularly for those students who aspire to be international lawyers.

Students participating in the competition will assume the roles of international lawyers in negotiating a series of legal problems. The problems will be based on real life examples and will comprise a common set of facts known to all participants and confidential information known only to the participants representing a particular side.

Each team will consist of two students, who must be enrolled in a full time degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) as at September 1 2016. Only one team per university will be allowed. The competition will begin 15 June 2016 (release of the problem), with the finals being 11 September 2016 and held in Delhi, India.

2. 2016 National Essay Competition – open now

The NEC is open to all Australian law students and recent law graduates.

Students are encouraged to submit an academic paper between 3,000 and 12,000 words on any legal issue.

The winner will receive a prize of $1,000. The top four papers will also receive national exposure in the 2016 Australian Law Students’ Association Academic Journal which is distributed to all Australian law student societies.

The due date for all submissions is Monday 6 June 2016 at 5.00pm AEST.

Social Justice & Equity

1. Clayton Utz Diversity Lecture

Clayton Utz will be hosting the inaugural Diversity Lecture at its Melbourne office this May.

This year, members of the CU LGBTI Alliance will present the lecture which will focus on the current legal framework concerning children hoping to transition and how it could be improved. As you may know, a key concern for these children and their families is the requirement for court approval before being able to undergo treatment. The lecture will address this and other issues.

The idea to host the lecture is borne out of CU’s desire to connect more with uni students, its prospective employees, by showing them its interest in and commitment to issues affecting groups which make its workplace a diverse and enriched environment. The CU LGBTI program, the LGBTI Alliance, is the mechanism through which the firm seeks to ensure that it has a culture of inclusion.

7. The inaugural Sue Campbell Oration presented by Professor Peter Joy

Published by the Journal of Professional Legal Education in 1991, Sue Campbell’s Blueprint for a Clinical Program highlighted the benefits of clinical legal education to both students and staff alike.

At the time of publication there were only two full-scale clinical legal education programs operating in Australian Law Faculties – one at Monash, established in 1975 and the context of Sue’s discussion, and one established in 1981 at the University of New South Wales.

Since that time, however, over 70% of Australia’s thirty-six law schools have developed clinical programs, with Sue’s article – and the strategies it offered other faculties – truly serving as a blueprint for this expansion. Not only has clinical legal education expanded greatly in Australia, it has now spread throughout the world.

The Susan Campbell Oration will review the state of clinical legal education in Australia and elsewhere; evaluate the impact of the strategies that Sue set forth; discuss where clinical legal education is today; and suggest a blueprint for a robust and innovative future.

4. Indigenous rights and international law (LAW5348) – Still spaces available in postgraduate unit

Led by Melissa Castan, this popular unit will examine the existing international law that promotes/protects human rights and freedoms of Indigenous peoples and locate this law within their culture and traditions. The impact of the major international instruments that protect and promote the rights of Indigenous peoples will be discussed. 9. Internship Opportunity in Rome, Italy

The four week internship with Studio Legale Delfino e Associati Wilkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, an international law firm in Rome, will run between around mid-June and the end of July 2016, with the final start and end dates to be negotiated with the student and the firm.

Subject to eligibility, Faculty funding will be available for the successful applicant from the Law Faculty’s Student Mobility Fund.

Studio Legale Delfino have expressed a preference for students who are well-advanced in their law degree, with strong academic performance and preferably (although not essentially) some knowledge of Italian or another Romance language. 10. Taxation Law and Advanced Taxation Law

Considering an additional qualification?

Two of our LLB(Hons) units (LAW4704 Taxation Law and LAW4332 Advanced Taxation Law) have been approved by the Tax Practitioners Board as approved courses in Australian taxation law that can count towards qualification as a registered tax agent. Note that in addition to undertaking these units, there are other requirements that must also be met.

11. Endeavour Mobility Grants 2017 applications now open

Applications for the 2017 round of Endeavour Mobility Grants funded by the Australian Government are now open.

This funding provides support for students on international outbound short-term programs and semester length programs and can include an administrative supplement for the management of the mobility projects.

We invite you to consider an application within the 2017 round of Endeavour Mobility Grants funding round through the following guidelines and the Monash internal application template.

The following forms of funding are available:

STMP provides student grants of $2000 per student for short-term study.
Asia Postgrad provides student grants of $5000 per student for semester study and $2000 per student for short-term study.
A Language Support Grant of $1000 per student is available under the Asia Postgrad.
A Project Facilitation Grant is available at a rate of $1500 per eligible program to be used to cover administrative costs associated with management of the program
