3. Volunteer Summer Research Intern for the Office of Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, Canberra

The Australian Greens are seeking a later-year law student to assist Senator Sarah Hanson-Young’s policy team with research for the Joint Select Committee on Australia’s Immigration Detention Network.  Senator Hanson-Young is Deputy Chair of the inquiry.

The position is offered on a volunteer basis and offers valuable experience for your curriculum vitae. Students with a strong academic background who have completed subjects in migration or human rights law are encouraged to apply.

2. Paid Leadership Opportunity – ‘PASS Leaders’ in the Faculty of Law, Semester 1, 2012

Are you interested in becoming a paid Peer Leader in Australia’s premier academic mentoring program?

The Faculty of Law and The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) are introducing the PASS (Peer Assisted Study Session) Program in support of LAW 2101, CONTRACT A.

PASS is an academic mentoring program which targets key 1st Year units (the “target units”). PASS provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated study sessions led by mentors called Peer Leaders for students seeking additional assistance with the target units. PASS is not a remedial program, and all students enrolled in the target units will be encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible.

PASS Leaders attend a two-day training program that focuses on how to facilitate group learning, how to conduct sessions and the concepts of promoting a learning community.

PASS sessions will commence in Week 3 of semester and continue until the end of Week 12 (ten weeks). Leaders must be able to complete a two day training program in February during ‘O Week’.

PASS Leaders are employed by the University, and are paid approximately $120/week during Semester.  It is possible for students to work as PASS Leaders for several semesters, and leadership positions are available for experienced PASS Leaders.

We are looking to recruit students to become PASS Leaders.  The basic criteria fill the leader positions are as follows:

  1. You must have successfully completed at least 48 credit points of study in a Monash bachelor degree.
  2. You must have at least 48 credit points of study required to complete your Monash bachelor degree afterSemester 2, 2011.
  3. You must have achieved a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 60 to date across your course.
  4. You must have achieved a Distinction or better in Law 2101, Contract A.
  5. You should possess excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.
  6. You must be able to attend the compulsory PASS Leader Training Program at Clayton on Thursday and Friday of O-Week (23-24 Feb 2012).
  7. You must be able to commit to up to five hours per week to the PASS program during Semester.

Students interested in applying to be a PASS Leader should e-mail the following documents to Adrian Devey, the Monash PASS Coordinator, at adrian.devey@monash.edu by 9.00am on Monday 12 December 2011.

  1. A brief cover letter that explains why you want to be a PASS Leader in the Faculty of Law (one page maximum). Applications are especially encouraged from students receiving Centrelink, Youth Allowance, Austudy, ABSTUDY, are living out of home, are first generation in their family undertaking a degree, or can demonstrate financial hardship. Please include this information in your application.
  2. A copy of your CV.  Please focus on demonstrating leadership and communication skills through relevant experience, such as tutoring or coaching, positions of responsibility in clubs and societies, or work in the retail or hospitality industries (two pages maximum).
  3. A complete copy of your latest academic transcript, including results from Semester 1, 2011 and the units in which you are enrolled in 2011 (the “unofficial” WES transcript is acceptable).

Applications that are either late or are incomplete (i.e. do not include the three documents specified above) will not be considered.

Position purpose

Student Success Advisers are responsible for providing general advice in relation to common transition issues experienced by students, making referrals to appropriate support services, and completing necessary record-keeping for each contact session.

2.  Summer Prison Volunteer Opportunity

Want to do something worthwhile with your spare time over summer?

PLEA is looking for skilled and dedicated students to run legal education workshops in prisons over the summer break.
The Prison Legal Education & Assistance Project (PLEA) is currently recruiting volunteers to commence in December 2011.

PLEA is a student-run volunteer organisation, based at Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service which provides legal education to remand inmates at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Deer Park and the Youth Justice Centre in Parkville.

PLEA is looking for Law Students who are willing to volunteer their time and energy to work with disadvantaged and marginalised people within the prison system.

Volunteers will research specific areas of the criminal justice system before conducting interactive seminars in both the Metropolitan Remand Centre and the Dame Phylis Frost Centre.

Summer volunteers will have the opportunity to become an ongoing volunteer, including working in our youth justice program and supporting inmates with legal research in prison libraries.

PLEA volunteers gain invaluable insight into the criminal law, the prison system and prison justice. All roles require excellent communication skills, initiative, patience and sensitivity – all guided by a firm committment to social justice and incarecration issues.

Applicants are required to commit a minimum of 6 hours per week between December 2011 – March 2012, as well as fortnightly prison visits.

3. Volunteer Position – National Native Title Council Law

The National Native Title Council (NNTC) is the peak body representing the alliance of Native Title Representative Bodies and Native Title Service Providers (NTRBs/NTSPs) from around Australia. The NNTC is recruiting two volunteers to work 1 to 1.5 days per week to assist CEO Brian Wyatt and Senior Administrative Officer Carolyn Betts in the day to day management and running of the NNTC. Tasks will vary but are likely to include accompanying the CEO to meetings, conferences and events, legal and policy research and liaison with key stakeholders. The NNTC is located at 638 Queensberry Street, North Melbourne VIC 431.

The applications for this position open 9am 17 October and close 5pm 24 November 2011.

Applications are to include a resume, an academic transcript and a cover letter. The cover letter is to provide evidence of the essential and desirable skills required for this position. The essential skills required for this position include well-developed communication skills and academic achievement. Desirable skills for this position include an understanding of Indigenous culture (and an explanation as to how this understanding was derived) and experience or skills in information technology (including the ability to feed/maintain a website, twitter and facebook page).
