1. Rhodes Scholarships 2017 – applications now open

Applications for the Rhodes Scholarships for 2017 are now open and will close at 5.00 pm on Thursday 1 September 2016.

The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the oldest and most distinguished scholarships in the world.

Previous winners from Australia include prime ministers Malcolm Turnbull, Tony Abbott and Bob Hawke, Justices Hayne and Heydon of the High Court of Australia, and Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth of the Victorian Supreme Court, pioneer in evidence-based medicine Anna Donald, Director General of CIVICUS Dhananjayan Sivaguru Sriskandarajah, Nobel Prize winners Sir John Eccles and Lord Howard Florey, and infrastructure expert Sir Rod Eddington.

Successful candidates will receive assistance with their travelling expenses to the UK, as well as a monthly allowance to contribute towards their living expenses whilst in Oxford. In addition, all University tuition fees are paid on the scholar’s behalf by the Rhodes Trust.

Rhodes Scholarships are available to those who have completed by 15 June 2017, at least four years’ of university study, such as an outstanding Honours degree, a combined degree or graduate degree, and enjoy success at a range of activities such as sports, involvement in community activities, and have a desire to lead and make a difference in the world. Note that age limits do apply and, for the 2017 round, candidates must not be born before 1 October 1991.

2. Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Homework Group at Port Phillip Prison

Applications are now open for a challenging and rewarding new Castan Centre program, the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Homework Group at Port Phillip Prison.

The program will provide weekly tutoring and mentoring sessions for Indigenous men incarcerated at Port Phillip Prison, in Melbourne’s west. We are looking for tutors to participate in the program.

Tutors will receive a comprehensive induction and training program and be mentored and supervised throughout the program. They will also receive $25 per session to cover their transport costs (in the alternative we may use part of the stipend to provide transport).

Applications close Friday 24 June 2016. The program will begin at the start of semester two. It is open to students from all universities.

3. CESAA European studies Essay Competition

Contemporary European Studies Association of Australia (CESAA) wishes to announce that the 23rd CESAA Essay Competition is now open for entries.

Essays from any discipline dealing with contemporary (post-war) Europe and/or the European Union can be submitted for consideration in one of the following two categories:

• Best essay by an undergraduate student (2,000-4,000 words)
• Best essay by an honours or postgraduate student (2,000 -5,000 words)

The closing date for entries is Tuesday 30 June 2016.

The Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is launching again for 2016.

Open to all Australian law students, the Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is an opportunity for students to get creative, get their name known in law and be in the running to win great prizes.

This year, students are invited to create a 2-5 minute film about what inspires them to study law, that will educate, entertain and engage their fellow law students and help them connect with law.

5. theDELINEATOR: facilitated ideation sessions for startups

Lots of people don’t consider themselves entrepreneurs. But it sometimes just takes an ideation session and they have come up with a number of interesting startup concepts in just a few hours.

This is an empowering, exciting and fun event that is great for team building and professional development.

We plan to run sessions in small groups of 10-30 people.

The venue is still TBC but we will advise you of the exact location when it is organised.

10. Inaugural Michael Taussig QC Family Law Essay Awards

The Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia is pleased to invite law students to participate in the inaugural Michael Taussig QC Family Law Essay Awards.

The Awards commemorate the life and contribution of Michael Taussig QC, one of the Family Law Section’s most outstanding members.

The Family Law Section is the largest of the Law Council’s specialist sections. Since its inception in 1985, the Section has developed a reputation as a source of innovative, constructive and informed leadership in all areas of family law reform and policy development. With a national membership of more than 2,500 family lawyers and related professionals, the organisation is committing to furthering the development of practice in family law for the benefit of the Australian community.

Two Awards will be offered in 2016, one for junior lawyers and the second for law students.

The student Award is open to law students from all Australian Universities, with a prize value of $1,500.

11. International Students Work Rights Legal Service

A new International Students Work Rights Legal Service is now operating in Victoria.

JobWatch Inc, in collaboration with the Study Melbourne Student Centre and Inner Melbourne Community Legal, is operating this new legal service at the Study Melbourne Student Centre every Thursday.

Study Melbourne Student Centre (SMSC) is a free and confidential ‘one stop shop’ where international students in Victoria can access a range of free support, information and welfare services.

As part of the service, a JobWatch lawyer will be based at the Study Melbourne Student Centre each Thursday from 9.00am until 5.00pm to give international students free and confidential legal advice about work-related matters. JobWatch is also available to assist international students with work-related matters during the rest of the week.

Inner Melbourne Community Legal (IMCL) is available to assist international students with general law consultations (not including immigration advice). A lawyer from IMCL will be at the Study Melbourne Student Centre every Thursday afternoon.

The Study Melbourne Student Centre is located at 599 Little Bourke St, Melbourne (close to Southern Cross Station).

The Editorial Board of the International Trade and Business Law Review (‘the Review) are now inviting submissions for Volume XX of the Review.

The Review publishes leading articles consisting of original research, case notes, comments, and book reviews concerning international trade and business law, arbitration law and comparative law.

15. Summer Human Rights Institute in New York

The Summer Human Rights Institute (SHRI) is a 2-week certificate program that provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory and application of international human rights law, enabling individuals with limited time to gain an in-depth understanding of this critical field.

Participants take part in daily lectures and workshops with Fordham Law professors, as well as guest lecturers from New York’s prominent human rights community, and engage in up-close examination of real world legal aspects and tools of human rights law and practice.

11. Open Day – seeking volunteers

Monash University’s Open Day for Clayton will be held on Sunday 7 August 2016.

We are seeking Undergraduate student volunteers to assist on the day.

This will involve speaking with prospective students and their families about your experience of studying at Monash, giving directions, greeting guests, helping with set-up/pack down and much more.

Although these positions are voluntary roles, the faculty does provide training and $50.00 vouchers for students who volunteer half a day (9.15am – 1.15pm OR 12.30pm – 4.30pm) and $95.00 vouchers for students who volunteer for a whole day (9.15am – 4.30pm).

If you have good communication skills and a well-rounded knowledge of the Law Faculty and campus please complete the application form by Monday 6 June 2016.

We will be holding student workshops closer to Open Day and will send an email inviting you to RSVP to a session.

The Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia is pleased to invite law students to participate in the inaugural Michael Taussig QC Family Law Essay Awards.

The Awards commemorate the life and contribution of Michael Taussig QC, one of the Family Law Section’s most outstanding members.

The Family Law Section is the largest of the Law Council’s specialist sections. Since its inception in 1985, the Section has developed a reputation as a source of innovative, constructive and informed leadership in all areas of family law reform and policy development. With a national membership of more than 2,500 family lawyers and related professionals, the organisation is committing to furthering the development of practice in family law for the benefit of the Australian community.

Two Awards will be offered in 2016, one for junior lawyers and the second for law students.

Although these positions are voluntary roles, the faculty does provide training and $50.00 vouchers for students who volunteer half a day (9.15am – 1.15pm OR 12.30pm – 4.30pm) and $95.00 vouchers for students who volunteer for a whole day (9.15am – 4.30pm).

8. Taxation Law and Advanced Taxation Law

Considering an additional qualification?

Two of our LLB(Hons) units (LAW4704 Taxation Law and LAW4332 Advanced Taxation Law) have been approved by the Tax Practitioners Board as approved courses in Australian taxation law that can count towards qualification as a registered tax agent. Note that in addition to undertaking these units, there are other requirements that must also be met.

9. What is Mediation? Free seminar with Vic Small Business Commissioner

If you’ve ever wondered about the mediation process and how it works, join Geoff Browne, the Victorian Small Business Commissioner (VSBC), for an overview of the mediation service provided by his Office.

This session will be co-hosted by the VSBC principal mediator, who will walk you through the mediation process, from arriving at the mediation venue to finalising Terms of Settlement, and highlight how to best prepare for and participate in a mediation.

The VSBC provides an independent, low cost mediation service for business-to-business commercial disputes.

The free session will be held during Law Week in one of the VSBC’s mediation rooms. There will be time at the end of the session for Q&As.

Attendees will also receive information packs including a $20 discount voucher towards an initial mentoring session with the Small Business Mentoring Service.

4. Indigenous rights and international law (LAW5348) – Still spaces available in postgraduate unit

Led by Melissa Castan, this popular unit will examine the existing international law that promotes/protects human rights and freedoms of Indigenous peoples and locate this law within their culture and traditions. The impact of the major international instruments that protect and promote the rights of Indigenous peoples will be discussed. 9. Internship Opportunity in Rome, Italy

The four week internship with Studio Legale Delfino e Associati Wilkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, an international law firm in Rome, will run between around mid-June and the end of July 2016, with the final start and end dates to be negotiated with the student and the firm.

Subject to eligibility, Faculty funding will be available for the successful applicant from the Law Faculty’s Student Mobility Fund.

11. Endeavour Mobility Grants 2017 applications now open

Applications for the 2017 round of Endeavour Mobility Grants funded by the Australian Government are now open.

This funding provides support for students on international outbound short-term programs and semester length programs and can include an administrative supplement for the management of the mobility projects.

We invite you to consider an application within the 2017 round of Endeavour Mobility Grants funding round through the following guidelines and the Monash internal application template.

The following forms of funding are available:

• STMP provides student grants of $2000 per student for short-term study.
• Asia Postgrad provides student grants of $5000 per student for semester study and $2000 per student for short-term study.
• A Language Support Grant of $1000 per student is available under the Asia Postgrad.
• A Project Facilitation Grant is available at a rate of $1500 per eligible program to be used to cover administrative costs associated with management of the program

1. English Language Assistance

The English Connect program is Monash’s new English language assistance program. It is aimed at international undergraduate and postgraduate students. English Connect is an expanded version of the Conversational English program trialled last year.

A new website will be up soon, but at the moment, program dates and times can be found on the old website here.

The free programs consist of:

• Let’s Chat – conversation in a fun environment – 1 hour each week over weeks 3-11, with over 40 sessions per week offered
• Peer Support – one on one help with academic English (written and oral), 20 minutes, no need to book. Held at John Medley Library, Mon-Thurs 10am to 2pm
• Workshops – Grammar workshops, 2 hours, register online

6. Monash Warwick Alliance Funding Schemes

The Monash Warwick Alliance Funding Schemes for 2016 have been announced.

The strategic alliance aims to enhance the experiences of students at Monash University and the University of Warwick, UK, through the development of new models of education, research collaboration.

The Student-led Activity Scheme provides a mechanism for students to get directly involved in activities that contribute to these aims.

A maximum of AUD$15,000 for expenses incurred by Monash students. Projects which bring sponsorship or third-party funding or in-kind support are encouraged.
