1. Just Leadership Program – applications close today

Applications for the 2019 Just Leadership Program close Friday 15 March.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2019, the Just Leadership Program provides participants with a fantastic opportunity to affiliate, learn from and listen to high profile speakers who are closely associated with social justice and equity issues in the law.

Selected students will be invited to participate in seminars focusing on a range of social justice issues, as well as to undertake a group project on one of the seminar topics. This project may take the form of a policy article, parliamentary submission, or other work done in affiliation with a human rights organisation or community legal centre.

Students interested in applying must be able to attend all of the following seminars:

  • Tuesday 2 April: Introductory Seminar: Leadership in Social Justice (6.00-9.00pm)

2. Law Ambassador Program – applications close today

Applications for the highly acclaimed Monash Law Ambassador Program 2019 Friday 15 March.

The program gives students of all years (LLB/LLM/JD) an opportunity to enhance your university experience by creating and implementing projects that benefit the faculty, the university or the wider community. It is a great means to develop employability skills, increase confidence and create lasting friendships.

Please note that applications close on 15 March 2019 (11:59pm AEDT) and shortlisted candidates will be required to attend the mandatory Program Launch Seminar on 29 March 2019 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM at Clayton campus.

International Legal Careers (ILC) is a student-led non-profit service started by a group of Monash Law Ambassadors. Established in 2018, ILC expressly aims to provide law students, legal academics & practitioners with a resource that details the experience of practicing law in foreign countries. 4. European Commission EDD 2019 Young Leaders Programme

The European Commission is inviting young people from around the world to play an active role in this year’s EDD. We are looking for 15 extraordinary young people aged 21-26 who can represent the powerful impact that youth are having in the development field.

The Young Leaders Programme will consist of a 10-day visit to Brussels, where Young Leaders will meet EU experts and stakeholders and play a leading role in the EDD Programme, which will include speaking in various session alongside global leaders. 1. Sir John Monash Medal – nominations closing soon

Each year, the Faculty of Law awards the Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement.
The Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement is awarded to a student who:
  • has completed the academic requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Laws and is eligible to graduate;
  • is judged to have an excellent academic record; and
  • has demonstrated a significant commitment to advancing the University’s goals of social justice, human rights and a sustainable environment.

Nominations for the Sir John Monash medal close Friday 22 February 2019.

A nomination can be made by the student, a fellow student, and any Monash staff member or any member of the community by completing the nomination form.

All nominations must include a letter from the nominator explaining the reason for the nomination and a statement from the nominee addressing how he/she meets each of the eligibility criteria. Please also provide any supporting information which could be of use to the selection committee and permission from the student to have his or her academic records released to the selection committee.

Please submit your completed nomination form and any supporting documentation to the Faculty of Law Student Services Manager via the online submission form by no later than 5:00 pm on Friday 22 February 2019.

2. Volunteer Opportunities at Monash Law Clinics –Clayton

The following volunteer opportunities are available in 2019 at Monash Law Clinics –Clayton for LLB & JD Monash Law Students.

Wednesday Night Advice Only Service

Applications for the Wednesday Night General Advice Session at Monash Law Clinic will open at 9:30am 4 March 2019 and close 6pm 11 March 2019. Please note that late applications will not be accepted.

You are applying to be part of the Wednesday night volunteer team, which provides advice to clients experiencing a wide range of legal problems.

Students are rostered to volunteer on Wednesday nights on a fortnightly basis from 6:00pm until approximately 8:30pm.

Orientation will be held on Wednesday 10 April 2019 at 6pm

Sessions will commence on 17 April 2019

Tuesday Night Family Law

The Tuesday Night Family Law Advice Service handles matters relating to Children, Divorce and Intervention Orders.

Students are rostered to volunteers on a Tuesday night on a fortnightly basis from 6:00pm until approximately 8:30pm.

Applications for Tuesday Night Family Advice Session at Monash Law Clinic will open 9:30am 4 March 2019 and close 6pm 11 March 2019

3. Attend a UN delegation in New York

UNCCA invites Australian Law student to apply to participate in the UNLAWS Scheme.

UNCCA (UNCITRAL National Coordination Committee for Australia) has established a scheme for Australian law students to attend UNCITRAL Working Group meetings in New York (UN Headquarters) in 2019 as part of a delegation with Australian UNCCA Expert members.

The aim of the UNLAWS Scheme is to increase awareness of the work of UNCITRAL and to provide students with a unique opportunity to participate in the consideration and formulation of future harmonised legal texts in relation to trade law.  Each Working Group sessions typically last of one week.

1. NILS Business & Human Rights Moot Court Competition – Netherlands 2019

The Network for International Law Students is back with the second NILS Business & Human Rights Moot Court Competition. 
NILS Business & Human Rights Moot Court Competition is the world’s first and only moot court competition exclusively focusing on the emerging area of Business & Human Rights.
The next moot will be held in Netherlands in July 2019. Preceding the final rounds in Netherlands, there will be qualifying regional rounds for the purpose of selecting the best teams to compete in Netherlands. We have the support of leading experts and organisations working on the area of Business and Human Rights Competition.

1. Law Student Essay Awards

Applications are now open for the Law Student Essay Awards

The Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia is pleased to commemorate the life and contributions of Michael Taussig QC, one of the Section’s most outstanding members, with two Family Law Essay Awards in 2018. Current law students are encouraged to apply for one of these awards, the Law Student Essay Award.

One Award will be offered to the value of $1,500.  To Apply for the Award, eligible candidates must submit an unpublished essay of no more than 3,000 words (including footnotes, appendices and tables) on a family law topic and its broader relevance to the community, by 20 August 2018.

Applications are now open for the award-winning Green Steps program run by Monash Sustainable Development Institute. Green Steps offers innovative and practical sustainability training and consultancy projects for ambitious emerging leaders at Monash University.

As part of the program, students will gain the skills and knowledge to transform attitudes and drive change for a more just, sustainable and resilient world. The program includes:

  • 4.5 days of interactive training: Develop skills in systems change, leadership, communication and behaviour change
  • Consultancy experience: Work on a sustainability consultancy project
  • Global networks: Join a global network of over 1200 change agents

4. Respect.Now.Always. survey

Monash University is a proud partner of the Respect.Now.Always. national initiative lead by Universities Australia to ensure students and staff are safe from sexual assault and sexual harassment.

The university is aiming to increase the awareness of reporting and support options for students who may have experienced sexual assault and/or harassment.

To assist us evaluate the effectiveness of Monash University’s promotions of reporting and support options, and to have a better understanding of the level of awareness thereof, the university has developed a very short survey.

Responses will assist the university enhance our communications on the RNA campaign and the support and referral services available at Monash. Please note that your responses to this survey will not identify you.

5. Human Rights Awards

The Human Rights Awards is the pinnacle of human rights recognition in Australia. Each year we are proud to recognise the outstanding contribution of individuals and organisations in promoting and protecting human rights and freedoms.

This year we have introduced a new Award category to recognise the contribution of local, state, territory and federal government bodies to the advancement and protection of human rights in Australia.

1. Windsor Review of Legal and Social Issues – call for submissions

The Windsor Review of Legal and Social Issues (“Windsor Review”) is now inviting contributions for Volume 40, to be published in Summer 2019. The Windsor Review is an entirely student-run and double-blind peer-reviewed interdisciplinary law journal.

Our mandate is to promote an analytical, practical, and empirical approach to the study of law, incorporating the perspectives of multiple disciplines.
