1. Free Public Lecture: How Gender Can Affect Progress Towards The UN’s Millennium Development Goals

Nana Oye Lithur is the Chief Executive Director of the Human Rights Advocacy Centre and is a respected human rights activist in Ghana.  Nana has led several fact finding missions to investigate human rights violations in Ghana and has also worked as a lecturer, presenting Human Rights/CHRI human rights lectures for journalism students. Nana has also been recognised for her work in human rights and in 2008 was a recipient and champion torch bearer for women’s rights. This event is co-sponsored BusEco PAL Program.

2. Monash Golden Key Presents: ‘The Real World Transition’

After spending many years within the comfort zone of the University environment, the transition into the real world can be pretty daunting. 1. Compete in the Castan Centre’s Human Rights Mooting Competition

Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Mooting Competition. Monash University will be entering two teams of three students (Senior Counsel, Junior Counsel, and Solicitor). 

Date: Monday 2 – Monday 9 August, 2010

The event is sponsored by Clayton Utz who will provide the following prizes:
Winning team: $3000
Runner-up: $1000

To be eligible, students must be in the equivalent of at least third year of a combined undergraduate law degree, or any year of a JD degree but must not have completed their degree.  It is preferable that competitors have completed some studies in human rights law.

2. Law Short Film Competition

The Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is launching for 2010.

Oxford University Press is inviting students to submit a film between 2–5 minutes long about law or the study of law. The competition is open to all students currently enrolled in an Australian Law School. Non-law students can also be involved, however at least one student per group must be studying a law subject.

The winners will be those judged to be the most creative, instructive and original – anything that helps other students to connect with law. The winners will receive:

  • 1st prize $1500
  • 2nd prize $500
  • 3rd prize $250

3. Summer Semester Unit Evaluation Results

The Faculty received good results for the Summer Semester Unit Evaluations 2009/2010. The Law Faculty rated an average score of 4.11 on Question 5 (Overall Satisfaction) compared with 4.15 for the last Summer Semester. 37 Units were evaluated of which 5 Units scored 4.70 or more on Q5, placing them in the ‘Outstanding’ category. The teachers of any Units scoring 4.70 or more will receive a Certificate of Commendation at the Faculty Teaching Workshop in October.

3. 2010 Postgraduate Conference in Public Law

The Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law plays a prominent, independent role in public debate on issues vital to Australia’s future including Charters of Rights, federal reform, reconciliation and native title, refugees and migration law and the challenges of responding to terrorism.

1. Global Changers

Global Changers is a Global Change Leadership Course which gives passionate young leaders everything they need to make a tangible difference now, not just in the future.

Monash University has partnered with The Oaktree Foundation to develop a comprehensive leadership program for 50 of its students.

Global Changers is a leadership course that aims to equip university students with the skills necessary to enable them to enact change in their own communities.

The eighth-month part-time program includes courses in personal development, issues education and skills development.

The curriculum will also focus on the skills necessary to be a strong leader: self awareness, leadership, emotional intelligence, group dynamics, and facilitation.

3. Telders International Law Moot Court Competition 2010

For the past thirty-two years, the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition has been an annually recurring event and has grown to be one of the most prestigious in the field.

The Telders Competition gives many young and talented undergraduate law students all over Europe the opportunity to excel in international law, consequently testing their creativity and powers of persuasion in a friendly competition.

Every year a new and challenging case is devised for the students to argue. The Telders Case 2010, ‘The Case of Pirates in the Treasured Sea’, combines legal issues in various fields of international law including piracy and the law of the sea. You may find the case on our website at:

Assessments (research assignments and take-home examinations) must be submitted as an electronic copy to:

Submission of a completed assessment task cover sheet is required.

Please remember you are required to keep an up-to-date copy of all submitted assessments to safeguard against the loss of work through accident or error.

You must put your name and Student ID number on every page of your assignment either as a header or a footer and you must number the pages in your assignment.

2. New Units – Enrol Now!

The Faculty is pleased to advise that Professor Samuel Murumba from the Brooklyn Law School in New York will be teaching the unit Current Issues in Intellectual Property (LAW7309), scheduled to commence on Wednesday 26 May, 2010.

The unit will concentrate on key, cutting-edge issues not covered in depth or at all in the other Intellectual Property Units. These issues mainly arise from the dramatic impact of complex technological and global developments on Intellectual Property law and practice.

They include:
IP-Jurisdictional issues, especially in the digital networked environment;The intersection of trademarks and commercial designations with domain names, especially the proposed generic top-level domain names (gTLDs) and domain names in non-roman characters which will have profound implications for online trademarks.
The expanding scope of trade mark protection (well-known marks/dilution, defensive registration etc).
Comparative database protection, including the EC Directive and US developments.
Comparative business method patents including the anticipated US Supreme Court decision in Bilskietc.

1. Appointment of Tipstaff to Justice Allsop, President NSW Court of Appeal

Applications are invited for the position of Tipstaff to Justice Allsop, President of the NSW Court of Appeal. The appointment will commence in late January 2011 for one year. Applicants should be prepared to continue on the staff of the President for the year 2012 as Researcher.

Position Title: Tipstaff (2011), Researcher (2012).

Time Period: 2 year

Position Description:
The primary role of Tipstaff is assisting the President with court related duties and research. This includes spending a substantial amount of time in court. In the second year of appointment, the tasks to be performed are research and assistance with administering the work of the Court with infrequent attendance in court.

2. Aurora Native Title Internship Program

The Program introduces law students to career opportunities in native title, policy, social justice and Indigenous affairs and aims to provide assistance to under-resourced and over-worked Native Title Representative Bodies (NTRBs) and Native Title Service Providers (NTSPs) and others.

There are two intakes for interns annually, during the summer and winter university breaks, for 5 to 6 weeks. Applications open in March and August of each year.

Applications are open to law students who have completed, or are currently completing, the Property Law component of their legal studies.

The on-line application period for the winter 2010 round of internships is from Monday 8 March to Thursday 1 April, 2010.

3. Law Student Mentoring Program

On behalf of Victorian Women Lawyers and the Women Barristers Association, I am delighted to invite all female students currently enrolled in Victorian law schools to participate in the 2010 Law Student Mentoring Program.

Now in its third year, the Program has developed into a celebrated vehicle for encouraging the next generation of female lawyers to gain valuable insights into the legal profession from current practitioners.

Wherever possible, each student will be paired with a mentor who shares common professional interests and geographical proximity. Pairs will be expected to meet at least once a month. If there are insufficient mentors to cater for student demand, preference will be given to students in their final or second last year of study. This year’s Program will run from mid-April, 2010 to April, 2011.
