1. Engelberg Center Research Fellowship at NYU

The Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy at NYU School of Law is accepting applications for a research fellow to begin in Autumn (Northern Hemisphere) 2018.

1. 2018 Louis Waller Lecture

Victoria was the first place in the world to pass laws governing assisted reproduction.

It all started with the ground-breaking work of Professor Louis Waller, who led the pioneering investigation into the social, ethical and legal issues arising from IVF.

Professor Waller himself will deliver the annual Louis Waller Lecture this year, providing an historical perspective on the lead-up to assisted reproductive treatment legislation in Victoria.

1. Nominations for the Sir John Monash Medal

Each year, the Faculty of Law awards the Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement.

The Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement is awarded to a student who:

• has completed the academic requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Laws and is eligible to graduate;
• is judged to have an excellent academic record; and
• has demonstrated a significant commitment to advancing the University’s goals of social justice, human rights and a sustainable environment.

Nominations for the Sir John Monash medal close this Friday 16 February 2018.

A nomination can be made by the student, a fellow student, and any Monash staff member or any member of the community by completing the nomination form.

All nominations must include a letter from the nominator explaining the reason for the nomination and a statement from the nominee addressing how he/she meets each of the eligibility criteria. Please also provide any supporting information which could be of use to the selection committee and permission from the student to have his or her academic records released to the selection committee.

Please submit your completed nomination form and any supporting documentation to the Faculty of Law Student Services Manager via online submission from by no later than 5:00 pm on Friday 16 February 2018.

4. Write for the ILA Reporter

The ILA Reporter (ilareporter.org.au) is the official blog of the Australian Branch of the International Law Association (ILA).

The ILA Reporter provides analysis, commentary and discussion on issues in public and private international law which have bearing on Australia and the wider region.

The ILA Reporter accepts articles on a rolling basis from academics, legal practitioners, and students. This is a great opportunity to be published by a well-respected non-government organisation with a wide readership.

5. Submit an article to the UCD Law Review

The UCD Law Review is Ireland’s leading student-run legal journal. The Review is published on an annual basis, with guidance provided by our academic advisors. The Review features articles on a variety of legal topics, written by students as well as those in academia and in practice.

The Board welcomes contributions on a broad range of contemporary legal issues, as well as articles addressing legal history.

Articles for consideration for inclusion in the 18th Volume are to be submitted in word format to  ucdlawreviewsubmissions@ucd.ie by 30 March 2018.

The email should contain the Author’s name, year of study or graduation, and contact details. The selection process is entirely anonymous so please do not include any indications of identity in the article.

A prize of  €500 will be awarded to the author of the most outstanding article.

The Board will consider articles as they are submitted and offers may be made prior to the deadline. Late submissions may be accepted at the discretion of the Editor. Further details, including information on submissions and the editorial process, may be found at  www.ucdlawreview.eu.

2. Cory Doctorow: How Do Writers Get Paid?

The past decade or so has seen incredible changes in how we read. New devices, platforms and marketplaces for books have risen and fallen, while traditional publishing houses and booksellers have adapted to suit readers’ changing habits and preferences.

But how have things changed for authors? In the midst of all the upheaval, who’s looking out for them – and what role does copyright play?

Hosted by Monash Law’s Professor Rebecca Giblin, Canadian American activist and author Cory Doctorow will speak with literary agent Clare Forster and copyright expert Zoe Rodriguez to help us get to the bottom of who advocates for what, and who actually benefits.

1. Law Building closure December – February

From December 2017 to mid-2018, the ground floor of the Law Building at our Clayton Campus will be undergoing a refurbishment to bring you an exciting new student space that better serves the need of our law student population. We expect completion to be around the middle of next year (2018).

To ensure the safety of our staff and students, the law building will need to be closed from the end of November this year, until the beginning of February 2018.  Staff and students will not have access to the Law Building during this time.

The Student Services staff will still be available to assist you during this period and all normal administrative requests should be sent through ask.monash for a timely response. If you need to visit Student Services in person, we will still be available to assist you. Student Services will be co-located with the Arts Student Centre in the Menzies Building:

The Law Library

The Law Library will also need to close during this period, however students will have access to the same library services.  Students will be able to:

• Use Search to request items held in the Law Library for pick-up at Hargrave-Andrew Library or Matheson Library at Clayton campus. Library staff will run a retrieval service once daily so please allow for some delay.
• Return items due at any library; after-hours returns available at Hargrave-Andrew Library.
• Access Summer Law unit texts on reading lists at Hargrave-Andrew Library.
• Find study spaces at the two other libraries on campus. Hargrave-Andrew Library will now be open until 9pm on Mondays and Tuesdays and 1pm-5pm on Sundays over summer.
• Get advice and ask questions at an Information point at any other library, through ask.monash or by telephone (03 9905 5054). Law Library research and learning skills staff can be contacted by email on lib-lawteam-l@monash.edu.

Due to the temporary closure, ‘Law’ will not be available as a pick-up location for inter-campus loans.

2. Your experiences of workplace dignity

Are you a law student who has completed (or about to complete) a clinical placement, being Professional Practice, Professional Practice – FLAP or Clinical Externship? If yes, we are interested in exploring your experiences of workplace dignity during this placement.

You will be asked to talk about experiences where your dignity/or the dignity of others was or was not upheld in an individual interview either face-to-face or over the phone (approximately 45 minutes).

Participants will be provided with a $10 gift voucher for appreciation of their time.

The study is titled “Exploring student and practitioner experiences of workplace dignity during work-integrated learning (WIL) placements”. You can learn more about the study here.

Your data will be kept secure and reported anonymously. Project findings will be reported back to Monash University with the aim to spread best practice and improve policy and practices.

1. Climate for Change fellowship

Applications are open for the Climate for Change Fundraising and Communications Fellowship program.

Climate for Change is a volunteer-­powered, not-for-profit organisation on a mission to create the social mandate for effective action on climate change.

Our goal is to encourage conversations about climate change with enough people to shift the social climate on the issue. 1. Clerkship Masterclass – Friday November 17

Are you undertaking a clerkship or equivalent? Then don’t miss attending our Clerkship Masterclass, designed to build essential skills for your Clerkship.

The next Clerkship Masterclass will be held on Friday 17 November at the Monash Law Chambers in the City. Exact times will be confirmed closer to the date, but will be from 9.45am to 4.00pm approximately.

This session is designed to build essential skills for your Clerkship. Presented by lawyers from top Law Firms, expert staff from the Law Library and from other legal organisations. The Masterclass has been designed to deliver essential, practical skills relating to research, writing, preparing memos and tips to work effectively during the Clerkship.

The Masterclass is primarily aimed at students who will shortly be undertaking a clerkship or equivalent. A more detailed breakdown of the day will be provided once the program has been finalised. A light lunch will be provided.

2. Assistant Investigator – VCAA

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) seeks a capable, enthusiastic person to fill a casual vacancy as Assistant Investigator from 13 November 2017 to 2 February 2018.

This position will suit someone with a legal and/or investigations background, a person currently undertaking a relevant tertiary qualification such as law or a recent graduate of the Leo Cussen Centre for Law.

6. Judicial Clerk to the Chief Justice of New South Wales

The Chief Justice of New South Wales, The Hon. T. F. Bathurst AC, is seeking applicants for the position of Judicial Clerk (Tipstaff) in chambers for 2019.

The successful applicant is expected to continue on in 2020 as Research Director.

The Judicial Clerk assists in court and with legal research. The Research Director spends less time in court, is given more complex research tasks and assists in other public functions. The position is ideally suited to applicants intending to pursue advocacy, academia or legal policy work.
