2. Michael Kirby on Health, Law & Sexuality

Renowned jurist and former Australian High Court judge The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG has been at the cutting edge of legal reform and intellectual inquiry for decades and has forged an international reputation as a powerful and articulate orator.

In this special event at the NGV’s Great Hall, The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG explores the legal and moral complexity that lies at the intersection of law, sexuality and health.

Justice Kirby will explore international conventions and the United Nations’ work on human rights, HIV/AIDS, and sexual and reproductive health issues. He will also review the situation for sexual and gender minorities in relation to international and criminal law.

1. King’s Student Law Review (King’s College London) – call for submissions

Submissions are welcome from all current Law students for the upcoming issue of the King’s Student Law Review.

The KSLR is a King’s College London publication, completely edited by students.

1. Approaches to Youth Justice: A Panel Discussion

With all the media coverage surrounding young people in detention, we have decided to host a panel discussion.

The speakers include Tiffany Overall, the policy officer from Youthlaw and Smart Justice for Young People spokesperson, and Christopher Trotter, a professor at Monash University and the Director of the Criminal Justice Research Consortium.

The panel will focus on the current approach to youth justice and the burgeoning concept of justice reinvestment, which encourages tackling the causes of crime and re-directing money spent on prisons into community based initiatives. There will be time for questions at the end.

3. Melbourne University Law Review‘s Annual Lecture

You are invited to attend Melbourne University Law Review‘s Annual Lecture.

This year The Hon Kenneth Hayne AC will deliver a speech on government contracts and public law, focusing on the Commonwealth executive’s non-statutory power to enter contracts.

The Hon Kenneth Hayne AC is a Professorial Fellow at Melbourne Law School. He was a Justice of the High Court of Australia from 1997 to 2015. Prior to his appointment to the High Court, he was a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria from 1992 to 1995 and a judge of the Court of Appeal of Victoria from 1995 to 1997.

3. Michael Shafar – Jewish-ish at MICF

2015 Monash Law grad Michael Shafar is debuting his show Jewish-ish at the Melborurne International Comedy Festival!

Since graduating Michael has performed on SBS’s RAW Comedy, represented Australia in the Laugh Factory’s Funniest Person in the World competition, hosted Channel 31’s The Leak and is currently writing for Channel 10’s The Project.

Jewish-ish explores Michael’s time doing Law, his clerkship experience at a commercial firm and his transition from Law into comedy.

4. Law Council of Australia’s Inaugural ‘Baxt Prize’

The Business Law Section of the Law Council of Australia (BLS) is excited to announce the creation of the Baxt Prize.

Offered for the first time in 2017, the Baxt Prize is named in honour of Professor Bob Baxt AO, among many other things, a founding member of the BLS. The 2017 Baxt Prize will be awarded for a research paper of outstanding quality which is based on the topic of ‘human rights and business law’.

The winner will receive a fully funded package (registration, flights, accommodation, etc) to attend the International Bar Association’s annual conference in Sydney in October 2017. Anyone under the age of 35 is eligible to submit a paper.

2. 2017 Just Leadership Program – applications now open

Applications are now open for the prestigious 2017 Just Leadership Program, an initiative of the Monash Law Students’ Society. Both undergraduate and postgraduate Monash Law students are invited to apply.

The Program consists of Q&A seminars on social justice issues with high-profile guest speakers, allowing participants of the Program to tap into the professional experience and expertise of the speakers.

Participants of the Program are also allocated into small groups to undertake a group project in relation to one of the seminar topics, allowing participants to contribute their leadership skills and demonstrate their commitment to and passion for a particular area of social justice.

The Victorian Bar is looking for volunteers to play the role of witnesses for the Advocacy Assessments sessions at the Federal Court.

The Advocacy Assessments sessions have been scheduled for the following dates:

7. Volunteer Opportunities at Monash Oakleigh Legal Service

Applications for volunteer positions at the Monash Oakleigh Legal Service close Sunday 5 March at 10:00pm.

Law students are rostered to volunteer on either Tuesday or Wednesday nights to be part of a team that provides advice to clients experiencing a range of legal problems, including divorce and intervention orders and general legal issues.

ALDI are currently recruiting 16 graduates nationally for the newly launched 2018 Graduate Program – applications are closing 31 March 2017.

ALDI’s 18 month Graduate Program, with a February 2018 start, allows graduates to rotate through all aspects of the business and develop their leadership skills. At the end of the program, graduates take on the role of Area Manager, running 3-5 stores in a multi-million dollar business as if it was their own.

KPMG Law’s Tax Controversy and Dispute Resolution practice sits within KPMG’s affiliate law firm.

The practice provides legal advice for all tax matters, including:

2. Italy research scholarships – International Institute for the Unification of Private Law

The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law invites applications for its research scholarships. These support top-level lawyers wishing to conduct research in the fields of uniform or comparative private law.

Postgraduate law students, academics, government officials with a good working knowledge of English or French may apply. Special attention will be given to applicants from developing and emerging economies.

Scholarships last for six weeks to two months. Between 15 and 20 scholarships are awarded each year. Funding will cover all or part of the cost of living expenses in Rome, Italy.

1. The Future of Elder Mediation

Dr. Anita Frayman will speak on the topic: The Future of Elder Mediation.

With the ageing of the population, the use of elder mediation is a growing rapidly. In this presentation Dr Frayman will distinguish elder mediation from other types of mediation, highlighting how intergenerational conflict may lead to elder abuse. She will discuss both the traditional role of the elder mediator in facilitating this support and the way she sees the role developing in the future.

Dr Anita Frayman practises as an elder mediator, facilitator, coach and aged care consultant, assisting older people and their families manage and avoid family conflict and elder abuse. She teaches ADR and presents seminars to industry and community groups.

Dr Frayman is an adjunct researcher at Monash University, a nationally accredited mediator and qualified lawyer with a PhD on cultural diversity and ageing.
