1. The L Card

2. Law Council of Australia Scholarships 2016: Business Law

Each year the Business Law Section offers three scholarships of $5000 to the writer of the best papers in fields of Competition, Corporations and Taxation Law.

The scholarships are targeted to ‘early career’ legal professionals with less than four years of professional experience in the legal field of their paper. In the past winners have come from across academia, business and government sectors.

These scholarships are well suited to any Honours or research student who has previously written on a topic in one of the available fields.

3. Leap into Leadership Online

Leap into Leadership Online is a suite of free modules to develop your employability and leadership skills at your own pace. It’s available for all current Monash students, any time – so you can complete as many modules as you like, at any stage of your studies.

Each module is practical, straightforward and fun, and takes about one to two hours to complete. There are no formal assessments to hand in, and you’ll earn a certificate for each module.

So, whether you want to hone your skills in communication, managing events or projects, teamwork or goal-setting, check out the modules on offer and get started today.

Competitions

1. HSF-NLUD International Negotiation Competition (INC)

INC is a competition organised by Herbert Smith Freehills and National Law University Delhi.

The first edition of the competition took place in 2014 and it was a big hit. The second edition, which was held in September 2015, drew participants from 23 internationally renowned universities from five countries, including the likes of Cambridge, Oxford, Sydney, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Cologne.

The competition aims at providing an opportunity to law students of select top universities across the globe to practice and improve their negotiation skills. It provides a platform for students to compete in a truly diverse and an international environment. The competition is carefully structured to simulate legal negotiations particularly for those students who aspire to be international lawyers.

Students participating in the competition will assume the roles of international lawyers in negotiating a series of legal problems. The problems will be based on real life examples and will comprise a common set of facts known to all participants and confidential information known only to the participants representing a particular side.

Each team will consist of two students, who must be enrolled in a full time degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) as at September 1 2016. Only one team per university will be allowed. The competition will begin 15 June 2016 (release of the problem), with the finals being 11 September 2016 and held in Delhi, India.

2. 2016 National Essay Competition – open now

The NEC is open to all Australian law students and recent law graduates.

Students are encouraged to submit an academic paper between 3,000 and 12,000 words on any legal issue.

The winner will receive a prize of $1,000. The top four papers will also receive national exposure in the 2016 Australian Law Students’ Association Academic Journal which is distributed to all Australian law student societies.

The due date for all submissions is Monday 6 June 2016 at 5.00pm AEST.

1. Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre Volunteer Opportunities

Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre is currently taking applications for its 2016 Semester 2 volunteer intake.

If you are interested in social justice and gaining legal experience working with clients who are socially and economically marginalised please consider applying.

We are currently looking for volunteers across both our offices, St Albans and Melton. The role will require a 12 month commitment to complete one full day per week.

2. King & Wood Mallesons “The Displacement Project”

On Wednesday 8 June 2016, King & Wood Mallesons, together with UNSW’s Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law, are hosting a panel event, “The Displacement Project – Perspectives on Climate Change and Displacement”.

The Displacement Project aims to raise awareness among members of the legal profession and the broader community about climate change-related migration and displacement, the limitations of existing international legal frameworks and the policies that can be implemented in response to this issue.

The Displacement Project has two fantastic speakers, from cross-disciplinary fields, who will each offer a unique insight into the human impact of climate change.

3. LIV Hot Topics: High Rates of Youth Imprisonment

It’s no secret that youth imprisonment rates are on the rise, but there are many steps that can be taken to prevent this being an ongoing issue.

What can you do to help lower the rate of youth imprisonment? Early intervention and knowing the root causes that lead young people to commit crimes is crucial.

This session will be delivered by experts in their field and is set to consider this topic from three perspectives: legal, social and anecdotal.

Panellists include Laura Wilson, Indigenous Rights Unit Lawyer, Human Rights Legal Centre and Ian Lanyon, Director of Secure Services, Department of Health and Human Services.

The moderator will be Melinda Walker, LIV Accredited Specialist in Criminal Law.

2. Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship 2016

The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship offers students the opportunity to spend a semester studying at a leading Asian university.

Uniquely, the scholarships also offer the freedom to ‘build your own adventure’ enabling students to individualise their exchange program to enhance their Asian experience.

2. PhD Scholarship Opportunity: Legal Services Use in Road Traffic Injury Compensation Claims

Expressions of interest are sought for a full-time PhD scholarship in the Faculty of Law and the Accident Research Centre at Monash University.

The scholarship is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council Centre of Research Excellence in Recovery after Road Traffic Injury.

The CRE brings together leading researchers at Griffith University, the University of Queensland, the University of Sydney and Monash University.

3. PhD Scholarship Opportunity: UK Scholarships

Scholarships for citizens of developed Commonwealth countries including Australia are offered for PhD and split-site PhD study in the UK.

These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Scottish Government, in conjunction with UK universities.

4. Volunteers needed for Oral advocacy assessment for ICC and Jury Workshop

The Victorian Bar is looking for volunteers to play the role of witnesses for the advocacy assessment component of our Indictable Crime Certificate (ICC).

The mock trials will be held during June and July 2016, 9.00am-4.00pm in the Federal Court Level 9, 305 William Street, Melbourne (Corner William & Latrobe streets). We will have more dates released for assessments in June and July.

You will be given a copy of the materials particularly a witness statement which summarises your evidence. You will need to be very familiar with the facts and be prepared to give your evidence and be cross-examined.

It is an opportunity to see some experienced advocates at work.

2. CESAA European studies Essay Competition

Contemporary European Studies Association of Australia (CESAA) wishes to announce that the 23rd CESAA Essay Competition is now open for entries.

Essays from any discipline dealing with contemporary (post-war) Europe and/or the European Union can be submitted for consideration in one of the following two categories:

• Best essay by an undergraduate student (2,000-4,000 words)
• Best essay by an honours or postgraduate student (2,000 -5,000 words)

3. Connecting with Law Short Film Competition

The Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is launching again for 2016.

Open to all Australian law students, the Connecting with Law Short Film Competition is an opportunity for students to get creative, get their name known in law and be in the running to win great prizes.

This year, students are invited to create a 2-5 minute film about what inspires them to study law, that will educate, entertain and engage their fellow law students and help them connect with law.

The Editorial Board of the International Trade and Business Law Review (‘the Review) are now inviting submissions for Volume XX of the Review.

7. Medico-Legal Society of Victoria Essay Competition

The Medico Legal Society of Victoria would like to invite final year students studying Law or Medicine to enter an essay competition.

The topic of the essay is:

“The most controversial issue the medico-legal sphere faces today is…..”

The competition is an excellent opportunity for final year students to gain access to a professional organisation prior completion of their degrees and the opportunity to meet and learn from professionals in their field.

9. Open Day – seeking volunteers

Monash University’s Open Day for Clayton will be held on Sunday 7 August 2016.

We are seeking Undergraduate student volunteers to assist on the day.

This will involve speaking with prospective students and their families about your experience of studying at Monash, giving directions, greeting guests, helping with set-up/pack down and much more.

Although these positions are voluntary roles, the faculty does provide training and $50.00 vouchers for students who volunteer half a day (9.15am – 1.15pm OR 12.30pm – 4.30pm) and $95.00 vouchers for students who volunteer for a whole day (9.15am – 4.30pm).

If you have good communication skills and a well-rounded knowledge of the Law Faculty and campus please complete the application form by Monday 6 June 2016.

New Colombo Plan mobility grants worth $5,000 are available to undergraduate Monash University students wishing to spend Semester 2 2016 studying in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on ACICIS Study Indonesia’s Indonesian Business, Law, and Society program.

The Indonesian Business, Law, and Society (IBLS) program provides students with a unique opportunity to study Indonesian Business, Law or Society, or a combination thereof, at the Indonesian Islamic University, Yogyakarta. All classes are conducted in English, and students have the opportunity to undertake an internship placement as part of their study.

12. Summer Human Rights Institute in New York

The Summer Human Rights Institute (SHRI) is a 2-week certificate program that provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory and application of international human rights law, enabling individuals with limited time to gain an in-depth understanding of this critical field.

Participants take part in daily lectures and workshops with Fordham Law professors, as well as guest lecturers from New York’s prominent human rights community, and engage in up-close examination of real world legal aspects and tools of human rights law and practice.

13. Taxation Law and Advanced Taxation Law

Considering an additional qualification?

Two of our LLB(Hons) units (LAW4704 Taxation Law and LAW4332 Advanced Taxation Law) have been approved by the Tax Practitioners Board as approved courses in Australian taxation law that can count towards qualification as a registered tax agent. Note that in addition to undertaking these units, there are other requirements that must also be met.

14. The Undergraduate Awards – deadline extended to 14 June 2016

The deadline of The Undergraduate Awards 2016 programme has been extended to Tuesday 14 June 2016.

Cited as the ultimate champion for high-potential undergraduates, The Undergraduate Awards is the world’s only pan-discipline academic awards programme, identifying leading creative thinkers through their undergraduate coursework.

UA also has 24 additional categories into which essays may be submitted, please have a look to see if you have work for other categories too.

UA is open to all penultimate and final year students, as well as 2015 graduates, of all disciplines.

Monash is affiliated with The Undergraduate Awards and students can submit up to three papers online here and be in with a chance to win an international award for their undergraduate coursework; students submit work they have already completed as part of their undergraduate degree once it meets the eligibility criteria.

15. True North Scholarship for Women

The True North Scholarship program has been created to inspire high potential female students and equip them with practical skills to develop leadership ability and increase personal impact as they start out in their careers.

3. Cognitive Biases in Decision Making

During a mediation, decisions have to be made by the parties in order to settle their dispute and process decisions also need to be made by the mediator.

As people form judgments and make decisions they fall prey to predictable and consistent errors which can impact on the quality of decisions and escalate conflict.

Professor Jill Klein from the Melbourne Business School will speak on the topic ‘Cognitive Biases in Decision Making’.

The presentation will provide a discussion of cognitive biases and how we can manage them in order to make optimal decisions.

4. Conciliating Sexual Harassment Disputes – Not Just a Personal Matter

The way we view and conciliate disputes of sexual harassment is changing.

We have seen through the Federal report into the Department of Defence and the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission’s own independent review into sex discrimination and sexual harassment in Victoria Police that the impact of such harassment in the workplace runs deep.

The case law around sexual harassment is also changing and damages are increasing to reflect community expectations that sexual harassment can no longer lightly be dismissed. In this current climate, it is timely we reflect on these changes and discuss how they can impact on the way disputes of this nature can be resolved through conciliation.

At this Victorian Association for Dispute Resolution (VADR) event Sophie Georgalis and Katie Bates from the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission will speak on the topic ‘Conciliating Sexual Harassment Disputes – Not Just a Personal Matter’.

Competitions

1. HSF-NLUD International Negotiation Competition (INC)

INC is a competition organised by Herbert Smith Freehills and National Law University Delhi.

The first edition of the competition took place in 2014 and it was a big hit. The second edition, which was held in September 2015, drew participants from 23 internationally renowned universities from five countries, including the likes of Cambridge, Oxford, Sydney, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Cologne.

The competition aims at providing an opportunity to law students of select top universities across the globe to practice and improve their negotiation skills. It provides a platform for students to compete in a truly diverse and an international environment. The competition is carefully structured to simulate legal negotiations particularly for those students who aspire to be international lawyers.

Students participating in the competition will assume the roles of international lawyers in negotiating a series of legal problems. The problems will be based on real life examples and will comprise a common set of facts known to all participants and confidential information known only to the participants representing a particular side.

Each team will consist of two students, who must be enrolled in a full time degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) as at September 1 2016. Only one team per university will be allowed. The competition will begin 15 June 2016 (release of the problem), with the finals being 11 September 2016 and held in Delhi, India.

2. 2016 National Essay Competition – open now

The NEC is open to all Australian law students and recent law graduates.

Students are encouraged to submit an academic paper between 3,000 and 12,000 words on any legal issue.

The winner will receive a prize of $1,000. The top four papers will also receive national exposure in the 2016 Australian Law Students’ Association Academic Journal which is distributed to all Australian law student societies.

The due date for all submissions is Monday 6 June 2016 at 5.00pm AEST.

3. LIV Hot Topics: High Rates of Youth Imprisonment

It’s no secret that youth imprisonment rates are on the rise, but there are many steps that can be taken to prevent this being an ongoing issue.

What can you do to help lower the rate of youth imprisonment? Early intervention and knowing the root causes that lead young people to commit crimes is crucial.

This session will be delivered by experts in their field and is set to consider this topic from three perspectives: legal, social and anecdotal.

Panellists include Laura Wilson, Indigenous Rights Unit Lawyer, Human Rights Legal Centre and Ian Lanyon, Director of Secure Services, Department of Health and Human Services.

1. Book Launch – United States Migrant Interdiction and the Detention of Refugees in Guantánamo Bay

Australia’s detention of asylum seekers in Nauru and Papua New Guinea is modelled on the long standing US Migrant Interdiction Program which includes the detention of refugees by the US in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

This new book by Dr Azadeh Dastyari examines the US’ compliance with its legal obligations as it interdicts asylum seekers at sea, detains refugees in its immigration detention centre in Guantánamo Bay and resettles refugees in third countries. It asks what lessons can be learned from the world’s longest running offshore processing and detention regime.

4. Cognitive Biases in Decision Making

During a mediation, decisions have to be made by the parties in order to settle their dispute and process decisions also need to be made by the mediator.

As people form judgments and make decisions they fall prey to predictable and consistent errors which can impact on the quality of decisions and escalate conflict.

Professor Jill Klein from the Melbourne Business School will speak on the topic ‘Cognitive Biases in Decision Making’.

The presentation will provide a discussion of cognitive biases and how we can manage them in order to make optimal decisions.

5. Conciliating Sexual Harassment Disputes – Not Just a Personal Matter

The way we view and conciliate disputes of sexual harassment is changing.

We have seen through the Federal report into the Department of Defence and the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission’s own independent review into sex discrimination and sexual harassment in Victoria Police that the impact of such harassment in the workplace runs deep.

The case law around sexual harassment is also changing and damages are increasing to reflect community expectations that sexual harassment can no longer lightly be dismissed. In this current climate, it is timely we reflect on these changes and discuss how they can impact on the way disputes of this nature can be resolved through conciliation.

At this Victorian Association for Dispute Resolution (VADR) event Sophie Georgalis and Katie Bates from the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission will speak on the topic ‘Conciliating Sexual Harassment Disputes – Not Just a Personal Matter’.

8. VADR Collaborative Family Law Panel

On Tuesday 17 May 2016 the Victorian Association for Dispute Resolution (VADR) will be hosting a Collaborative Family Law Panel made up of a family law dispute resolution practitioner, a family lawyer and a forensic accountant.

It is not always easy to settle all the matters relating to a family dispute in a mediation or family dispute resolution. Collaborative law has evolved mainly to deal with more complex cases involving property without going to the Family Court.

The panel will discuss how different professionals cooperate to assist a family in reaching agreement, and how this is different from other forms of ADR, such as mediation.

Monash University’s Open Day for Clayton will be held on Sunday 7 August 2016.
